Five area homeschoolers recently competed in a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and took home first place honors from a field of ten teams, many of which were competitive adult teams.
The area homeschool sports program, the Storm, had the tournament to raise funds to help meet their remaining expenses for this basketball season. Austin Brown, a 2008 homeschool graduate, decided he wanted to enter the tournament and asked 4 current homeschoolers if they would like to play. Current senior, Justin Parker, and juniors Christian Shull, and twin brothers, Isaac and Isaiah Smith made up the team. The tournament format allowed five players to be on the roster, but only three could play on the court during the contests.
The team went 6-1 during the tournament. After going 3-1 in a pool play format, the team then had to win two more games to make it to the championship. They won those two games and in the championship match-up, they had to play the team that had given them their only loss earlier that day. This time these boys got the win.
After seeing the competition, Austin said "he did not think they would win it". The team shot the ball well enough from behind the three-point line to offset any size disadvantage against the opposing teams. Justin said "it was a fun tournament".
Note. These five guys were also part of the Piedmont Electric men's basketball team which won the summer league tournament championship this past summer over in the town of Hillsborough. The four current homeschoolers are members of the current Storm varsity basketball team. Austin was a Storm team member last season. |
